Internship at Clemson University
Synopsis
-
This internship took place during the summer of 2022 at the ICAR labs at Clemson University.
-
My advisor was Prof. Venkat Krovi, Michelin Endowed Chair of Vehicle Automation in the Departments of Automotive Engineering and Mechanical Engineering at Clemson University.
-
-
In this internship, we researched, designed, and developed a technique to automatically analyze images of skin lesions to distinguish between malignant lesions (melanoma - skin cancer) and benign lesions.
-
Early detection of malignant skin lesions can save lives; around 2 people die from skin cancer every hour in the US.
-
-
We used a convolutional neural network to achieve our goal. We employed a pre-trained deep neural network, RESNET-18, and fine-tuned using MatLab's Deep Network Designer for malignancy diagnosis.
-
Results from our research indicate that it is a promising solution that could be applied for early warning of skin cancer in a non-invasive manner.
